Guide

Get the data out, in the shape you need

Reading the text off a page is only half of it. A bill is useful as a table, a form is useful as a list of fields, and a letter is useful as plain text. Once Kuraly has read your document you can ask for any of those in your own words.

  1. 1

Wait for the scan to finish

Open the document from your workspace once it is done. You will see the text exactly as it was read off the page, before anything has been tidied up.

  2. 2

    Read it through first

Check the parts that matter to you — the total on a bill, the date on a form, a phone number. Numbers and codes are worth a second look on any scan, whatever tool produced it.

  3. 3

Ask for the shape you want

In the format box, describe what you need in plain words: "make a clean invoice table", "list each field and its value", "just the paragraphs, no headers". Kuraly rewrites the extracted text into that shape.

This reshapes text that was already read from your document. It does not go back and look at the image again, so asking for a different format will not recover something that was never read.

  4. 4

    Correct anything that is wrong

The result is an ordinary editable document. Fix a misread digit, delete a line that came from a smudge, type in something the camera missed. Your edits are saved as you go.

  5. 5

Keep it, and find it later

It lives in your workspace alongside everything else you write, in the folder you chose when you uploaded. You can open it, edit it and run the writing tools over it like any other document.

Things people ask

What can I ask for?
Anything you can describe: a table, a list of fields, plain paragraphs, only the totals. It is a free-text instruction, not a fixed menu.
Can I reformat twice?
Yes. Ask for something different and it reshapes the same extracted text again.
Does reformatting cost another page?
No. Pages are counted when the document is read. Reshaping the text afterwards does not read the image again.
Can I re-run the scan itself?
Yes — a finished scan can be run again, which is what to do when the reading itself went wrong rather than the formatting.

If something goes wrong

A column in the table is empty or shifted.

Tables are reconstructed from where the text sits on the page, so a tilted photo or a wrapped line can misplace a column. Straighten the photo and re-run, or fix the row by hand — it is an editable document.

A number is wrong.

Correct it in the document. Then, if it matters, re-run the scan from a squarer, better-lit photo: digits are usually misread because of the image rather than the number itself.

Whole sections are missing.

Anything outside the frame, in deep shadow or badly out of focus is never read, and no amount of reformatting brings it back. Re-photograph the page and upload it again.
